Easter Island is in the southeastern Pacific, once occupied by Polynesian people. The natives of Easter Island died out, or had to leave, because they used up all their resources.
Whenever I hear Peter Coyote's voice, I tend to listen with a scrutinizing ear... :-) Interesting video.
I've wondered; how 'other directed' were they? My ethnobotanical education tells me that very possibly these folk were imbibing for generations with psychotropic plants to infuse visions and here might be the results. When I do it, I'm much more environmentally aligned! LOL happy Easter Holte!
Wow Holte,I had no idea. This really goes along with Stimpsons "Suzie and Jesus" video.
Another somewhat analogous instance might be Indians in the Valley of Mexico fighting wars to capture people to sacrifice in religious ceremony.Although somewhat exaggerated by the Spanish in their zeal to convert (another tale!)there is some truth to it.
What a shame, all those resources wasted on arrogant self-importance. Why couldn't those ignorant savages have been more enlightened like us modern sophisticated type humans? We know God wants us to build more tanks, ships, missles, nukes, and planes 'cause we got us a lotta crusadin' to do.
I guess we can trade the moai of Easter Island of that period with the hyper-commercialism and materialism of today. Except that now we are playing on a global scale.
I heard a tidbit on another show that to give the entire human race a lifestyle like that of the one middle class people here in the United States have it would take the resources of four to five Earths.
Do we know for sure that the inhabitants all died out, as opposed to leaving by sea? I vaguely recall reading or hearing something to that effect years ago.
In any case, reminders that we humans now have the power to ruin our Earth nest are timely and useful.
Beach - that to give the entire human race a lifestyle like that of the one middle class people here in the United States have it would take the resources of four to five Earths. Jeez that is mind-blowing what we must consume here.
Rapa Nui-one of my favorite movies.
ReplyDeleteI'm going out and plant a tree right now.

Dave - The scale is different, but history just keeps on repeating.
ReplyDeleteBee - Well Leonard was an alien himself. Live long and prosper.
ReplyDeleteParsley's Pics - Should be, won't be.

ReplyDeleteS.W. - However the original inhabitants did or didn't leave, they have an historical reputation disproportionate to their size.
